Texas Hodem Poker is one of the most popular versions of poker and is the one that you are likely to see on televised tournaments. There are different versions of the game and here the basic rules will be explained and then some of the variations as well. You can try some of these variations at Best Online Casinos.
If you do not know anything about poker at all then there are a few pointers here. Firstly the game is normally played with a full pack of cards and the suits have no ranking. Each player will end up with a hand of five cards and they want these to be the highest ranking. Each player will reveal their ‘hand’ in order to see whose is the best and that person takes the money that was bet. In poker the Ace is the highest card and the two or deuce is the lowest.
To rank the cards there is a system. The higher value cards (such as the picture cards and the Aces) are worth more. A hand with the highest ranking cards could win, but there are some exceptions as you will see. The worst hand to have is where each card is a different value and does not have numbers which run in succession. You can better this by having a pair. A higher ranking pair will beat a lower ranking one. If two people have the same pair, then the one with the highest value card out of the remaining ones will win. This card is often referred to as a kicker. Two pairs would beat a pair and if two players had two sets of pairs then the one with the highest value pair would win. If they both had a pair of Aces and one had threes and the other Kings for the remaining pairs then the one with the Kings would win. If both had identical value pairs then the kicker would decide who wins. To beat two pairs you need three of a kind. This may also be called a set or trips and it just means three cards of the same value. The highest value set wins but in Holdem it is possible for two people to have the same three of a kind and then the kicker comes in to play again.
To beat a three of a kind, you would need a straight. This is a set of cards which run in number order, such as a 2,3,4,5,6. If two players have straights then the one with the highest ranking one would win. It is important to know that an ace would be considered to be low in the straight A,2,3,4,5 and this is the lowest value straight you could have. You cannot have a straight which goes through the Ace, so it would either have to have the ace as the highest or lowest card and something like Q,K,A,2,3 would not be allowed. The next best hand is a flush. This is a hand of cards which contains all of the same suit. They do not have to be consecutive numbers. If two players have one then the player with the highest value card wins.
The next best hand is a full house. This is a three of a kind (three cards the same) and a pair. If two players have one, the highest three of kind will win, if both have the same then the highest pair will win. To beat this hand you would need a four of a kind. This is very rare and is sometimes also referred to as quads. In the rare chance that two players may have this, the highest ranking one wins.
The best possible hand is a straight flush. This is where you have all cards of the same suit and they run in consecutive order. (If they run through the Ace such as Q, K, A 2, 3 then this would count as a flush). If the cards are 10. J, Q, K, A then this is a royal flush and the absolute best hand you could get. Two equal value straight flushes would have to share the pot as not suit out ranks another.
In holdem poker the cards are dealt with initially just two cards for each player which and face down. The player can look at their own ‘pocket cards’ or ‘hole cards’ . There will also be five community cards dealt which all players share and can use to improve their hand, if they wish. They can only use up to five cards. As you become more skilled you will be able to look at the community cards and work out what the best possible hands are from those cards. This will help you to know whether what you have is good or not.
The last thing to mention is the betting. There are four rounds, starting when you have your first two ‘hole’ cards. Then Three community cards ‘the flop’ are dealt and there is another round of betting. Then the ‘turn’ which is the fourth community card is dealt and the penultimate round of betting takes place. Finally the last community card, the river card or fifth street, is placed on the table and the final round of betting is done. In each round of betting a player can choose to fold, which means pull out of the game and surrender any money they have already betted, they can raise the bet or they can equal the bet placed by the last player. Once all players equal the bet or all but one have folded then the betting ends. Once the game commences, the player with the highest hand will take the pot or it will be split by equal ranking players if necessary.
